This remarkable Anglerfish jaw skeleton showcases one of the most extraordinary feeding adaptations found anywhere in the animal kingdom.

Found in the depths of the world's oceans, anglerfish are famous for their bioluminescent lure and fearsome predatory lifestyle. Living in near-total darkness, these highly specialised fish rely on ambush hunting techniques, using their oversized jaws and backward-pointing teeth to trap prey that ventures too close.

The specimen displays beautifully preserved upper and lower jaws lined with numerous razor-sharp teeth. Each tooth curves backwards towards the throat, creating a highly effective natural trap that prevents captured prey from escaping once seized.

The dramatic triangular display posture highlights the intimidating appearance of this deep-sea predator and makes for an eye-catching display piece. The skeletal structure demonstrates the incredible adaptations that have evolved in some of the ocean's most extreme environments.

Educational Information:

Anglerfish inhabit some of the deepest regions of the world's oceans, where sunlight never penetrates. Many species possess a modified dorsal spine that acts as a glowing lure, attracting unsuspecting prey directly towards their waiting jaws.

Their teeth are designed to point backwards, allowing prey to enter easily but making escape almost impossible. Combined with expandable stomachs, some anglerfish are capable of consuming prey nearly as large as themselves.

Condition:

Well-preserved specimen displaying excellent tooth retention and natural anatomical detail throughout. Please refer to photographs for the exact specimen offered.

Ethical Natural History:
